Our Expeditions
Students on Ice expeditions take youth participants from around the world on unforgettable educational journeys to the Arctic, Antarctic, and many places in between. A team of scientists, Elders, artists, musicians, historians, knowledge keepers, visionary leaders, engage and support youth in their learning journeys. Together, they learn from one another while developing a deeper understanding of these important regions, their histories and complexities, and foster a commitment to climate action, building healthy communities, and environmental stewardship. The outcome is an experience that changes perspectives and inspires action and initiatives for a nature positive world.
2026 Arctic Expeditions
Next summer, SOI will return to the Arctic for an epic series of expeditions rooted in science, Traditional Knowledge, connection, and inspiration! If you’ve ever wondered what a life-changing SOI expedition is like, this is your chance to experience life at sea. Set against a backdrop of glaciers, icebergs, fjords, and remote Northern communities, our 2026 season presents a unique opportunity to explore critical themes, including climate change, healthy ecosystems, sustainable communities, and the future of the Arctic!
Who Can Join?
Our expedition programs bring together diverse youth and educators from around the world who have a passion and commitment for learning and making a difference in the local and global community. Thanks to the support of our global partnership network, funding is available for the majority of youth participants.
Past Expeditions
Students on Ice expeditions provide a transformative “first step” in a life-long journey of learning and discovery. Past expeditions have included 21 to the Arctic, 15 to the Antarctic, and the historic Canada C3 journey around Canada’s entire coastline. By connecting with diverse peoples, knowledge, and ideas in these remarkable spaces, SOI helps to open hearts and minds to what is possible. Youth invariably leave SOI’s expeditions with new perspectives and goals for their futures. They go on to join a global network of like-minded alumni, mentors, and partners who are working together to make a positive impact on people and the planet.
