The Students on Ice - International Polar Year Arctic Youth Expedition 2009 is one of the most exciting and important contributions to the International Polar Year, and one of the most comprehensive youth expeditions ever undertaken!

The ship-based journey will explore the northern reaches of Nunavik and eastern Baffin Island, Nunavut. It will involve 65 students, aged 14-19, as well as a team of 45 scientists, polar experts, educators, artists, leaders, writers, innovators and environmentalists. The team includes over 20 northern aboriginal youth, as well as student participants from Monaco, the United States and every Canadian province and territory.

While on the expedition, participants will encounter wildlife, including whales, seals, polar bears, walrus, and seabirds; visit northern communities; learn about the effects of climate change on Arctic ecosystems; scientific and traditional knowledge system perspectives; and participate in 'hands-on' educational and research activities.

Every day of the expedition will be different. Activities include shore landings, hikes, community visits, Zodiac cruises, and ship-based exploration. The education program will involve presentations, workshops, seminars, small group discussions and much, much more!

The main themes of the expedition include:

1) We are at a critical point in the Earth's history. New perspectives gained through an intense educational experience in the Arctic can develop and enrich identity, relationships, and commitment to well-being at home, in community and in society.

2) Youth have a key role to play in contributing to social innovation and socio-ecological issues within all societies.

Other expedition themes include:

- A focus on International Polar Year priorities.
- The impacts of climate change on the Arctic region and its peoples.
- The role of the Arctic as a cornerstone of our planet's ecosystem.
- Inspiring future leaders and ambassadors for the planet.

This expedition is a unique opportunity for participating youth to expand their knowledge of the circumpolar world and to gain new global perspective of the planet, its wonders, and its present and future challenges.
