Expedition Update: Iqaluit, Baffin Island - Aug 16
Community Visit - Flight home to Ottawa, Ontario

Today - the last day of the expedition - the team visited Nunavut's capital, Iqaluit, for a jam-packed day of activities! They were on the beach by a dozen Iqaluit who youth acted as chaperones by guiding the groups of students around the capital.
It was a busy, exciting day. Highlights included a visit with elders, a tour of the Legislative Assembly, and a giant farewell Arctic lunch BBQ at the Sylvia Grinnell Pavilion. Plenty of media and a who's who of Arctic dignitaries came out to meet and speak with the youth - including the Deputy Premier of Nunavut, the Commissioner of Nunavut, and Sheila Watt-Cloutier - recent Nobel Prize nominee!
After a late afternoon hike (to work off the barbeque), Team SOI headed off to the airport. After checking their luggage and bidding farewell to the Northern students who are flying out of Iqaluit today and tomorrow - everyone boarded their special First Air Charter, fastened up the seatbelts and promptly fell asleep.
SOI HQ met the team at the airport at about 9 pm. After boarding buses and loading up the luggage truck, it was off to Leeds House at Carleton University. The students had about an hour of free time to check back in to their rooms and goof around until the 10 pm curfew was sounded! Tomorrow - will come early for many students as they begin winding their way home.
