Arctic Expedition 2005 Itinerary at a Glance

Our Arctic expedition itinerary is always subject to change due to weather and ice conditions. It is rare that we ever follow an itinerary exactly as planned. One of the mottos of expedition travel is Flexibility is the Key. With that in mind, here is an outline of our exciting Arctic itinerary:

July 22 - Today is the day for you to travel to either Ottawa or Boston. This evening we will all rendezvous in Boston to catch our (overnight) flight from
Boston to Reykjavik, Iceland.

July 23 -
Reykjavik - Spend day visiting the capital city of Iceland. Board our expedition vessel this afternoon and check-in. This evening we will have our introductory briefing.

July 24 -
Heimaey, Westmann Islands - We spend half the day visiting this scenic volcanic island. In the afternoon, we visit one of the icecaps of Iceland!

July 25 -
Porlakshafn, Iceland - Today we spend the entire day visiting one of Iceland's ice caps, as well as an active Geysir and we will explore some of Iceland's spectacular countryside!

July 26 - Sea Day sailing from
Iceland to Greenland. Our education program of lectures and workshops will kick into high gear today!

July 27 - Sea Day sailing from
Iceland to Greenland. Be sure to get out on deck to look for seabirds and whales.

July 28 - Afternoon arrival to
Prins Christian Sound, Greenland. Our first stop in Greenland will be at Herjolfness, a Viking ruin site. Later in the day, we will visit the small southern Greenland town Nanortalik.

July 29 -
Tasermuit Fjord, Southern Greenland - Spend day hiking and exploring this spectacular southern fjord. This evening we will visit the small island of Uunartog, where we will enjoy some enjoy the hot waters of some ancient hot springs!

July 30 - Cruising north along
Greenland's west coast. Today we will explore some of the fjords around the Paamuit Region.

July 31 - Sea Day crossing the
Davis Strait to Baffin Island, Canada. Great chances for iceberg sightings today!

Aug 01 -
Pangnirtung, Baffin Island - This morning we arrive to Canada and spend part of the day visiting "Pang", an Inuit community on the East coast of Baffin Island.

Aug 02 -
Auyuittuq National Park - We spend the day visiting this spectacular National Park and hiking to the Arctic Circle! This evening, we will visit the ruins of an old Whaling Station called Kekerten.

Aug 03 - Ice-Cruising the outer
Cumberland Sound and Monumental Island - Today will be an exciting day look for Polar Bears on the ice, whales, seals and much more.

Aug 04 -
York Sound and the Grinnell Glacier - Our final full day on board the Explorer will be spent exploring the Meta Incognita Peninsula.

Aug 05 -
Iqaluit and Ottawa, Canada - This morning we arrive to the capital of Nunavut, Canada. After we disembark, we'll have some time to visit the legislature and other main attractions of this interesting town. This evening we board our flight to Ottawa, the capital city of Canada. Some of you will catch connecting flights home. Others overnight in Ottawa.

Aug 06 -
Return flights home for remaining group.
