WELCOME TO THE STUDENTS ON ICE
ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION 2009!
Welcome message from Geoff Green
SOI Founder, Executive Director and Expedition Leader
We are extremely excited about this year’s expedition! We have an extraordinary team of 65 students from around the world travelling south to the World’s Greatest Classroom! Accompanying them are 25 scientists, polar experts, educators, artists, musicians, and expedition team members! It's going to be the journey of a lifetime for our participants!
Between December 26th and January 12th, parents, students, educators and polar enthusiasts can visit this site to share all of our expedition moments. We will be posting photos, journals and expedition updates on a daily basis!
This expedition marks the beginning of our tenth anniversary! Ten short years ago, I was standing on a beach in Antarctica with a few hundred thousand Chinstrap penguins, and a simple thought emerged: Imagine, if we could give this experience to youth at the beginning of their lives? Imagine how this might change their perspectives, inspire their futures, and help to connect them to the natural world!
Since then, our organization has taken over 1,500 hundred high school and university students, teachers, scientists, historians, artists, explorers, authors, educators, leaders, innovators and polar experts from 40 countries on expeditions to both Poles! Thousands more have been introduced to the Polar Regions through our outreach activities.
These journeys provide a powerful platform for hands-on learning activities and research, workshops, presentations, lectures, hikes, exploration, understanding place, and so much more.
Please enjoy your journey with us to Antarctica - and for those interested in joining us on an upcoming Students on Ice Arctic or Antarctic expedition, please visit our main website or contact our office.
In the expedition spirit,
Geoff Green
