Tuesday, December 25, 2007: Day 1

Toronto, Canada - 5:05 pm EST

Posted from SOI World HQ

MERRY CHRISTMAS to all - it has been one to remember!

Today our team of expedition participants began their long journey south. 64 fortunate students and 25 exceptional environmental educators are making their way from around the world to Buenos Aires, Argentina. All are eagerly anticipating their Polar adventure ahead!

Our team will be arriving to the Argentine Capital in various stages, before later travelling to and coming together tomorrow in the world's southernmost city of Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego.

As pockets of our team have gathered at airports on each of the world’s continents north of our Great White destination, people have begun to share their stories and passions about what has brought them to Antarctica. We look forward to co-creating an experience that may change us forever!

Our Toronto contingent will have the opportunity to travel to Buenos Aires via Chicago, while our group from Miami will fly directly to Argentina’s most populous city. Families can feel free to contact the Students on Ice office with any questions they may have regarding flight schedules and itineraries.
Expedition students and educators are a truly international group. Our participants will represent Australia, Canada, Iran, Israel, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, the Palestinian territories, Portugal, Russia, the UAE, the UK, and the USA.

For our students, this journey began months or even years ago. The stories of how everyone has come to be a part of this expedition are as diverse as they are fascinating and inspiring. Some students have been doing endless fundraising. Some have won contests. Some have been selected and sponsored to participate through various programs around the world. It is great to finally put faces to names after so many months of preparation. It is fascinating to see how dreams can and do come to fruition.

So here we go . . . So much lies ahead! Adventure and discovery await! We look forward to sharing our journey south with each of you.

Be sure to visit our Expedition News Link to follow what electronic media from around the world is writing about our journey!
