An engineering student at the University of Western Ontario has been selected to join an international expedition to Antarctica to study and learn more about environmental issues and climate change.

Daniel Hammond, of London, a Monseigneur-Bruyère high school graduate who began attending Western this year, is one of approximately 70 students from around the world to be accepted to take part in the International Polar Year Antarctic University Expedition 2009, taking place Feb. 13-28, 2009.

The expedition is part of the annual Students on Ice (SOI) program, but before Hammond can embark on this once-in-a-lifetime excursion, he's on another mission to raise $10,000 to fund the trip.

Hammond's participation in the expedition depends on whether he can raise $10,000 in sponsorships. So far his fundraising efforts have raised $2,000. He is approaching local businesses, organizations, as well as individuals in the community to lend to the cause.

"I am excited and inspired by our natural environment and think it is essential for my generation to rediscover our symbiotic relationship with the planet," explained Hammond. "I believe that we need not only educate ourselves, but be passionate about sustainability and realize the drastic measures we must take to fight climate change. The main focus of this trip is not merely self-improvement, but an effort to reveal the environmental devastation of one of the most majestic and unique, yet isolated and remote ecosystems on the planet. It is important for me to not only experience this for myself, but share it with my community."

SOI is a unique initiative dedicated to taking students from around the world on learning expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctica. The International Polar Year Antarctic University Expedition 2009 is a ship-based field course. SOI is the only organization in the world that offers an opportunity for students to be immersed in hands-on research activities and lectures, taught by polar experts, educators, and researchers.

In addition to the 70 students, the SOI vessel will host 19 university faculty, scientists, experts, and educators for the two week.

"The program builds on the education and experience of individuals to help them lead in their respective fields as they go on into the world," said Niki Trudeau, SOI participant and outreach coordinator. "Our expedition selects students and leaders from around the world each year for these expeditions, and we are thrilled to have Daniel on board with us. His leadership and experience is a perfect match to the work that we do."

Hammond will be holding a fundraising event on Oct. 28 in the courtyard environment at Aroma Mediterranean Restaurant, 717 Richmond St. Guests will enjoy fine cuisine while taking in Hammond's presentation of the expedition. All Londoners are invited to attend. Tickets, $40, are on sale and can be purchased in advance.

Tickets are available at Arome Aroma Restaurant, 519-435-0616 or contact Hammond at 226-663-6959.
